Nagisa is a weird guy. He wouldn't talk to Shinji for weeks, then suddenly he'd call him asking if he could help him cook. And even when Shinji said no, Kaworu would still appear at his front door at lunch anyway.
When trying to kick him out didn't work, Shinji surrendered and decided to do something Nagisa could not burn down the kitchen while doing: fried eggs and rice. At least, he thought he couldn't.
"Can I help fry the eggs?" Nagisa said over Shinji's shoulder, making him jump and burn his hand in the frying pan. He cursed while putting his hand under the cold sink water. Nagisa stared at him like a lost dog.
"Are you okay, Shinji-kun?" he asked, getting closer and taking Shinji's hand into his. The boy felt his face heat up, and pulled his hand away quickly, making it slam onto the table right where he had just burnt it. Shinji bit his lip to suppress a scream of pain.
Shinji thought of simply telling him to fuck off or to tell him to go home, but instead, he just sighed. "... Check if the rice still has water in the pan." he then went to the bathroom to look for a band-aid.
He spent only 2 minutes in there, but when he came back to the kitchen, it smelled horribly burnt. Close to the stove, Nagisa was staring at the rice pan, which had a now burnt cloth with a hole on top of it. When Shinji came back into the room, all he did was stare at him and say "I may have tried speeding up the rice cooking process. I don't think it went well."
He then noticed that the frying pan with the eggs was still on, and its contents looked almost black.
He, of course, wanted to kick Nagisa with all his strength, until he remembered he had only made rice for two, and it was the last pack they had, which meant he either ate this thing, or he starved, since he didn't have enough money for ordering take out.
And so now they were here, eating burnt food in a kitchen that smells even more burnt. At least Nagisa looked happy while eating that stuff. He just hoped that the pan could still be useful, and that Asuka and Misato wouldn't try to kill him in his sleep because of the smell the entire apartment was coated in.
